Here are your Round Three questions. The deadline for this round is Sunday, May 30 at 11:59PM (CST). When your answers are ready, email them to russ@springfieldtrivia.com. This week, the bonus point will go to the player who recruits the most new entries. Just get one or more players to play round three and include your name somewhere in the post.  If there is a tie for the most recruits, both players will get a bonus point.  No early bird bonus this week.

Wow.  You obviously have the hang of the questions now.  I’m not sure round three will be hard enough now, but round four will be for sure.  Here are the answers to Round Two:

  1. There are six Jims in the bunch, but only one Tom, Dick, and Harry. What are the last names of those three? (2 points)
The Jims, are of course the six US Presidents named James.  So Tom is Jefferson, Dick is Nixon, and Harry is Truman.
  2. I recently did an online image search for a word, and these are some of the images that were returned in the results. Can you tell me what the word was? (3 points)
SPROCKET (or Sprockets) Clockwise from upper-left: Sprocket the dog from Fraggle Rock, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Mike Myers (The Sprockets – SNL Sketch), and of course, a sprocket.
  3. In what two movies will you find talking animals, with their lines recorded by Albert Einstein? (2 points)
Actor Albert Brooks was born Albert Lawrence Einstein.  He lent his voice to Marlin, the father of the title character in Finding Nemo, and Jacob the Tiger in Dr. Dolittle (the 1998 remake).
  4. How can I go from Liverpool to Edinburgh to Hamburg to Rome to Perth and back to Liverpool and travel less than 700 miles? (3 points)
You can drive that circle around the state of Indiana.  That’s the only state that I could find those cities (with those spellings) within a 700 mile range.
  5. If #18 and #10 are tragic lovers from an answer in the first round, what dances are #6 and #20? (2 points)
Foxtrot and TangoClick here for the explanation if you missed this one.
  6. Steve Miller may be the king of bad lyric rhymes (“Abracadabra”-”Reach out and grab ya”, “facts is” – “Texas”), but who is responsible for trying to rhyme “in a” with the name of a bald, Russian-born actor? (2 points)
Tim Rice was the answer I was looking for, but I also accepted any of the performers who released recordings of “One Night in Bangkok”
  7. Name the movie from which this still frame is taken: (3 points)
A Scanner Darkly. If you haven’t seen this yet, do yourself a favor and check it out.
  8. While putting together the question about mothers for Round One, I found some interesting info about siblings. For example, there is an Olympic gold medalist who has a sister who starred in a TV sitcom. That sister’s son on the show has a sister who played one of three daughters on another sitcom. That actress married a famous hockey player whose brother was also a star in the NHL – and both were Olympians. Can you tell me the names of all three pairs of siblings? (3 points)
Olympic gold medal winner Donna de Varona’s sister, Joanna Kearns played ‘mom’ to Kirk Cameron on Growing Pains.  Kirk’s sister, and Full House star, Candace married hockey player Valeri Bure, brother of NHL star Pavel.
  9. In what US town will you find a radiograph signed by both the patient AND the man in this photo? (3 points)

The guy in the photo is Jacksonville, Illinois native Ken Norton.  He broke Muhammad Ali’s jaw in a championship fight in 1973.  The autographed xray is exhibited in a mini museum within a used car dealership in Hookset, NH.
  10. Martin, Goldberg, Martin, Crystal, Rock, Stewart, DeGeneres, Stewart, Jackman, ________. What two names complete this sequence? (2 points)
In a list of past Oscar hosts, the two names that complete the list are Martin and Baldwin.  Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin shared the hosting duties in March.

  1. There are six Jims in the bunch, but only one Tom, Dick, and Harry. What are the last names of those three? (2 points)

  10. Martin, Goldberg, Martin, Crystal, Rock, Stewart, DeGeneres, Stewart, Jackman, ________. What two names complete this sequence? (2 points)

25 total points, PLUS 1 bonus point for the first person to submit their answers to russ@springfieldtrivia.com. Good luck!

And remember…I don’t grade on spelling, but the spelling within the questions is often important to notice.

  5. On July 8, 2005 Larry Walker did something in San Francisco that no other St. Louis Cardinal has ever done. What was this feat? (2 points)
Walker is the only St. Louis Cardinal who has ever hit a ball into McCovey Cove on the fly. Only 17 non-Giant batters have pulled it off, and only 3 of those have done it more than once. Walker’s home run on that day was the 10th of the 15 he hit in his 17th and final season.

It’s been a while since the last quiz league, and with the trivia night season winding down I thought this might be a good time to try it again.  It’s hard with online quizzes to keep players from using search engines to come up with the right answers, so these quizzes will feature questions that will require some brain work even to find the answer on Google.

There will be ten rounds of ten questions (just like a trivia night) and the player with the highest total score at the end will take home a fabulous prize package (which has yet to be determined).  Each round will run for a week, from Monday through 11:59 Sunday night.  Email your answers to russ@springfieldtrivia.com when you’re ready.  First entry gets one bonus point.   Scores will be posted each Monday.

Importantly, don’t think of these quizzes as your standard trivia rounds, but more of a trivia scavenger hunt.  The questions will require some knowledge to figure out – but the challenge is in how you arrive at the correct answer.  The first round will be relatively easy – and more Googleable than the ones that folllow – just to get you used to the style.

Inspired by a Nick Rogers Facebook post tonight about Glass Tiger, I decided to make a list of possible questions for a trivia night category. As you might know, Glass Tiger had the help of fellow Canadian Bryan Adams singing backup on their 1986 hit, “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)“. I was able to track down a few other well-known artists who provided backup vocals on hit songs. These may turn into a category someday, so take notes:

Can you think of any more?

Both KofC halls will be busy with trivia this weekend. First, the west side KC hosts a joint fundraiser for The Government Bar Association, the Sangamon County Bar Association, and the Central Illinois Women’s Bar Association on Friday night. There will be mulligans at this event.
On Saturday, a trivia night to support the ICARE Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is being held at the north end KC on West St. (how’s that for confusing?). No mulligans here.
Also on Saturday, for trivia fans northwest of town, there will be a trivia night to benefit the Redbird Youth Football team in Virgina. They will also be selling mulligans.

3 events this weekend, all on Saturday, starting with an early one at the Cathedral (524 East Lawrence). It starts at 5:30, so if you sign up for this one make sure you note that and don’t miss half of it by showing up at 7:00. *

There’s also a “Student Ambassador” trivia night at Knight’s Action Park to raise money for Alicia Van Meter, who will be traveling to the UK this summer. Normal start time on that one. *

The 3rd event will be at Rochester United Methodist Church and will help the Reynolds family bring home Shaling, an orphan from China.

* Mulligans

I added a new page to the site to serve as a repository for old rounds from past trivia nights. These are PDF conversions of the original slideshows, so less pizazz but all the content. I’ll add more when I get a chance, and I’m also working on a way to include the audio & video categories as well.

The link is in the menu up at the top of this page, or you can just click here.
