I admit, some of these were tough. But the number of perfect scores in recent rounds had me determined to stump everyone with at least one question. I succeeded.
Here are the answers to the tenth and final round of this season of the Quiz League:
- The scenes that I painstakingly captured from that stack of DVDs were specifically done for the music that was playing during those particular scenes.
- In the first pair, in those scenes from Glory and Excalibur, you hear parts of “O Fortuna“, a movement from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. I was going to use a scene from The Doors that fit the clue, but it was hard to find a frame in that scene without a lot of nudity. The music from Carmina Burana is used in a ton of movies during climactic battle scenes or confrontations with demons.
- In these scenes from Kick-Ass and Shrek, you hear Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” while Chloe Moretz’s Hit-Girl and Shrek take care of business.
- Next, you see the scenes from Men in Black II and The Hangover where we’re treated to that classic, “Who Let the Dogs Out?” by the Baha Men.
- The eagle-eyed among you were able to spot the scenes from Date Night and Benchwarmers that featured “CobraStyle“ by Teddybears. It’s quickly on it’s way to the movie soundtrack cliche territory of songs like “Walking on Sunshine”.
- Had I shown Steve Carell on guitar for this scene, it likely would have given it away. This was the scene where he helps Dane Cook’s character through Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open the Door” in Dan In Real Life…also featured during the scene on the right in Grosse Point Blank.
- This is the pair that inspired the idea. One night, I accidentally watched Observe and Report. Toward the end of the movie, when Seth Rogen’s character is chasing the flasher through the mall, the song playing is The Pixies’ “Where is My Mind“. I only really noticed it because of the song’s place in the iconic final scene of Fight Club…which made me wonder about songs featured in different movie scenes. You’re welcome!
- Look at your telephone keypad. Most of you figured out that dialing those numbers, you could spell out the question: “According to Tommy, what is Jenny’s phone number?” The answer, of course is 867-5309.
- I think I finally put together a mix that wasn’t completely foiled by technology. The songs, in order were “Wooly Bully” by SAM the Sham and the Pharaohs, “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”, by PAUL Young, “Tall Cool One” by ROBERT Plant, “What Goes Around” by IDA Corr, “Sunrise” by NORAh Jones, “Six Play” by GEORGE Benson, “Willie the Pimp” by FRANK Zappa, “We’re All Going to Hell” by IDA Maria, “Home” by EDWARD Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and “Breaking the Habit” by LINKIN (sp) Park. If you figured out the first names of the artists and Googled a few of them, that would have led you to the LAPD Phonetic Alphabet, and any song by any DAVID would have been good enough for a bonus point.
- That’s Manchester, England. If you haven’t seen 24 Hour Party People, go to Netflix right now.
- Ah, the group photo…
Back Row: Medgar Evers, Chuck Yeager, Arnold Palmer, John Wayne, John Foster Dulles
Middle Row: Will Rogers, Ted Stevens, Butch O’Hare, Bob Hope, Louis Armstrong
Front Row: Thurgood Marshall, Fiorello LaGuardia
All of these men had airports in the US named for them. If you answered with any other person who fit that, you were given the bonus. - I’m not a doctor…but he played one on TV.
I was at one time a union president…of the Screen Actors’ Guild
I have something in common with Alan Alda…since he attended the University of Iowa, he was also a “Hawkeye”.
Beware? He was born on the Ides of March, 1913.
I’m known for saying the same 12 words almost every day….“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.”
Macdonald Carey - Fans of New Edition’s “Cool it Now” were most likely to get this one.
Ronnie Spector, Bobbie Gentry, Rickie Lee Jones, and Michael Steele (Mike) - Just do a basic Alpha to Number translation (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.)

- If you made it all the way through the puzzles for #10, you were able to submit John F. Kennedy for the answer and picked up 4 points.
Thanks to everyone who played this season, especially those of you who lasted all ten rounds. Trust me, it’s just as challenging to write these things as it is to figure them out, so I’m looking forward to a few weeks off from the pressure of trying to stump you geniuses.Scores will be totalled by tomorrow and the winners will hopefully get their prizes before I leave for Vegas on Friday. Thanks again!
