Round Five Answers

  1. Why might Professor Grivetti need to go back to the drawing board on a logo he designed 19 years ago? (3 pts)
Al Grivetti was a grad student at NIU when he designed the current BigTen logo, with the hidden 11.  With the addition of Nebraska, and possibly more schools to the conference, he may be called on to update the design.  He’s now a Graphic Design professor at Clarke College in Iowa, after teaching at EIU for 6 years (where he had some great students).
  2. Listen to the following audio and tell me which REM song fits the theme. (3 pts)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

All of these songs (Vogue by Madonna, Jack and Diane by John Cougar Mellencamp, and Rock On by David Essex) mention the actor James Dean.  REM’s Electrolite fits that pattern with the lyric, “Hollywood is under me / I’m Martin Sheen / I’m Steve McQueen / I’m Jimmy Dean”.

On a totally unrelated note, another Jimmy Dean passed away as I was writing this post.  Weird.

  3. What title do the movies shown in these two stills share? (2pts)

Even if you’ve never seen the Hitchcock classic, and aren’t big on documentaries, you might be able to conclude that the kid in the bottom photo is a participant in a spelling bee.  Chances are, there’s only one film called Akeelah and the Bee, so your other option is the fantastic doc, Spellbound from 2002.  The first photo is from the Dali-inspired dream sequence in Hitchcock’s 1945 Best Picture nominee.
  4. Who’s nearly six month streak came to an end because of a FedEx mix-up? (2 pts)
Who is Ken Jennings, Alex? Jennings’ run on Jeopardy came to an end after 74 wins when he incorrectly guessed “FedEx” on the Final Jeopardy clue, “”Most of this firm’s 70,000 seasonal white-collar employees work only four months a year”.  His challenger, Nancy Zerg provided the correct question, “What is H&R Block?”.
  5. What city is this? (3 pts)

Vancouver, British ColumbiaBesides the North Shore Mountain backdrop, probably the most distinctive landmark in this photo is the Harbour Center in the middle.
  6. What sitcom’s finale after a nine year run featured a real estate deal, a pregnancy, a new business opening, and the realization of a goal? (3 pts)
Mel sells the diner, Vera gets pregnant, Jolene opens a beauty salon, and Alice finally gets a recording contract in the series finale of Alice.
  7. What name is missing from this list? (2 pts)
    1) Joseph (Germany)
    2) ____________
    3) Albino (Italy)
    4) Giovani (Italy)
    5) Angelo (Italy)
That first name and country gave it away, didn’t it?  Joesph is Joseph Ratzinger, otherwise known as Pope Benedict XVI.  Albino is Albino Luciani, AKA Pope John Paul I.  The man in the middle of course, is Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyła.
  8. What the heck is this thing, and what does it have to do with West Virginia? (2 pts)

This is West Virginia’s Official State Fossil, Megalonyx jeffersonii (or Jefferson’s Ground Sloth).

  10. Lynette couldn’t do it and thanks to Billy, Sara couldn’t either. What were they trying to do? (3pts)
Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme made a feeble attempt to assassinate President Ford on September 5, 1975.  Less than 3 weeks later, Sara Jane Moore got one shot off in an attempt to kill Ford, but missed by about 6 inches.  A bystander, Oliver “Billy” Sipple then tackled Moore, preventing her from taking a second shot.
